Tinnitus Treatment Methods

Tinnitus may be a sign of underlying medical conditions. Individuals should have a complete examination by an ear specialist. A complete medical exam should be done on all individuals. Tinnitus can often be caused by factors such as blood pressure, kidney function and drug intake.

Tinnitus is a condition that can be treated with multiple methods. Tinnitus treatment is generally multi-disciplinary and involves many symptom management methods.

Conventional Drug Treatment

Although many medications have been used to treat tinnitus, none of them are specifically designed for it. Some people suffering from chronic tinnitus may find some relief through drug therapies. Anti-anxiety drugs, antidepressants and antihistamines have all been used to treat tinnitus. Although many people are able to manage their tinnitus better, there can be serious side effects from drug therapy.

Other Treatments

Tinnitus relief has been reported by many people using herbal preparations, homeopathic remedies, vitamin and mineral regimens, as well as herbal preparations. Others have experienced relief from acupuncture and cranio-sacral treatment, magnets, high-baric oxygen, hypnosis, and craniosacral therapy. Massage therapy and energy-work such as Reiki can be helpful in treating tinnitus. Some people have experienced mild allergic reactions to herbal preparations. However, most other treatments are safe.

Cochlear Implants: The cochlear implant sends an electrical signal from the brain to the ear. A cochlea is a spiral-shaped cavity in the inner ear that houses an electrode. The receiver is placed just below the skin behind the ears. Cochlear implants can only be prescribed for patients who are deaf or near-deaf because electrode implantation will destroy any remaining healthy hair cells.

Tinnitus Maskers

Non-medical treatment to reduce unwanted noise. Tinnitus maskers can be worn as a hearing aid and produce a neutral sound. More than 60% of patients suffering from severe tinnitus reported relief. The tinnitus instrument is a newer device that combines a hearing aid with a masker. This device helps the brain to ignore tinnitus sounds. The tinnitus instrument must be fitted and tested on all individuals.

Hearing Aids

Tinnitus sufferers with hearing loss may experience partial or complete relief from their tinnitus when wearing hearing aids. The hearing aid amplifies background sounds so that the attention is not on the tinnitus noise.

Biofeedback - This relaxation method has been used successfully for stress-related and pain-related disorders for 25 years. Biofeedback helps people control their body functions, including skin temperature, muscle tension, and pulse.

Biofeedback is used to treat tinnitus. It helps to reduce anxiety and stress levels. Sometimes, biofeedback tinnitus therapy can take several months of weekly sessions before you notice any improvement. Up to 80% of patients experience some relief from their tinnitus symptoms, while 20% report total relief.
